Your account

An account is optional: everything works on a phone that never signs in. With APRS Connect Pro, signing in also keeps your settings and messages in step across your devices. See Sync between your devices.

The account holds your email address and, if you choose them, a password and two-step verification. It does not ask for your name. If you use settings sync, it also holds the settings your devices send, as described below.

Creating an account

Open Settings → Account.

  • With a password: enter your email and a password of at least 10 characters, then tap Create account.
  • Without a password: enter your email and tap Email me a sign-in link.

Either way, we email you a link and a 6-digit code. Tap the link on this phone, or type the code into the app. Both work for 15 minutes, and only in the app that asked for them, so a forwarded email is no use to anyone else. Confirming signs you in.

If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder, then tap Send again.

Signing in on another device

Open Settings → Account on that device and sign in with your email and password, or tap Email me a sign-in link. Open the link, or type the code, on the device that asked for it: it does not work anywhere else.

Forgot your password? Use Email me a sign-in link, then set a new one under Password once you are in.

After ten wrong passwords or two-step codes in a row from one network, sign-ins from that network are refused for 15 minutes. Other networks are not affected, and neither is a device you have signed in on before, so someone else typing your address cannot lock you out. If the account gets a very large number of wrong passwords from many networks, a device you have not signed in on before may have to wait a few minutes between tries.

An emailed code allows five tries; after that, ask for a new one. Signing in with an emailed link or code is never locked out.

Password

Under Password you can add one to an account that signs in by email link, or change the one you have. If you signed in more than ten minutes ago, the app asks you to confirm it is you first. We email you whenever the password changes.

Two-step verification

Two-step verification is off unless you turn it on. When it is on, signing in needs a code from an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Aegis) as well as your password or email link.

  1. Under Two-step verification, tap Turn on.
  2. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app from another device, or tap Open in authenticator app on this phone. You can also type the Key in by hand.
  3. Enter the 6-digit code the authenticator shows and tap Confirm and turn on.
  4. The app shows ten recovery codes. Save them somewhere safe and tap I've saved these. They are shown only once.

Each recovery code works once, in place of an authenticator code. Use one if you lose the phone with your authenticator on it. New recovery codes replaces the whole set; it needs a code from the authenticator.

To turn two-step verification off, tap Turn off and enter a code from the authenticator or a recovery code.

Sync between your devices

With APRS Connect Pro, every device signed in to your account can share its settings and its messages. There is nothing to set up: sign in on each device and it syncs.

You choose what each device sends and receives. Under Settings → Account → Settings sync → Choose what syncs, each group has four choices:

  • Both: send this device's settings and take changes made on your other devices.
  • Send: keep your account up to date, but never change this device.
  • Receive: follow your other devices.
  • Off: this device keeps its own.

The groups, and what they start at:

Group Starts at
General (display, map, message settings, alerts and reminders, APRS OTA settings) Both
Messages (every conversation, what you read or deleted, thread names, mute and archive) Both
Pinned stations, Blocklist Both
Digipeater coverage (where your devices heard packets repeated from) Both
Custom services (services you imported or corrected) Both
Callsign and path, Beacon profiles and saved packets (the packet composer's), Radios and connections Send
This device (keep screen on, screen rotation, background running, map cache, car display) Off

Callsign and path start at Send so that each device stays its own station. A phone on -13 and a car on -9, for example, both transmit as themselves. Set a device to Receive only if you want it to be the same station as your others. Two devices beaconing with the same callsign and SSID is the one setup to avoid.

A few things never sync, whatever you choose: whether a device is beaconing, emergency mode, your subscription, notices about a device's own state, and data and privacy settings. How long a device keeps packets, tracks and coverage, the device database, and whether it sends usage and crash reports are each device's own decision. A second device never starts transmitting because the first one did.

Messages

A message heard on one device shows on your others, usually within a second or two while the app is open on them, and otherwise the next time they open. What you read on one device is read on all of them, and what you delete on one is deleted on all of them. When two of your devices hear the same message, you still see it once.

A message that arrives by sync is never transmitted or acknowledged by the device it arrives on. The device that heard it acknowledged it; the device that sent it is the one that retries it. Resending another device's message from this one sends a new copy under this device's callsign. When a conversation holds messages to or from more than one of your callsigns, each is labelled with the callsign it was to or sent as.

How much history to send is a choice under Messages: 30 days, 90 days or everything, the first time a device starts sending its messages. Everything is the default. Later changes always go.

Messages from the app's Support and News threads stay on their own device.

Digipeater coverage

Each device sends its own coverage grid every few minutes, and every device's map shows all of them together. Where two devices heard packets from the same spot, the map counts the larger of the two rather than adding them, because they usually heard the same packets. Each device still prunes its own coverage on its own schedule, and what one device prunes goes from the others too.

Devices sharing one callsign

If two of your devices use the same callsign and SSID, one of them beacons (and acknowledges messages) at a time, so the map never shows your station in two places. Messages still send from whichever device you're on.

  • The Account screen says which device is beaconing. Take over moves it to the one in your hand.
  • If that device goes quiet for ten minutes, another takes over by itself.
  • If the device you're on can't send something itself (for example the desk during an op run from the phone's radio), the beaconing device sends it for you.
  • While another device is beaconing, the Radio screen shows it as the first channel: its radio, when it last checked in, and its last position report. Beacon asks it to send one now.
  • Asking it to beacon tells you what came of it: sent, on RF or APRS-IS, and whether a digipeater repeated it, or why it could not.
  • A message it is sending for you says where it is: not yet sent from this device, waiting for the other device, or why the other device cannot send it. If it has not gone in 15 minutes it is marked Send cancelled and Retry sends it again.
  • An emergency always transmits from the device you activate it on.
  • On APRS-IS, each device connects under its own name: your callsign with an SSID above 15, for example N0CALL-25 and N0CALL-41 for two devices sharing N0CALL-9. A server lets only one connection use a name, so two devices using the same one would keep disconnecting each other. Your packets still go out as your station. The device's name can show in their path on sites such as aprs.fi.
  • Without internet, or without Pro, every device works exactly as it does on its own.

When things change

When you sign in on another device, it takes your account's settings for everything it receives. When the same setting changes on two devices, the later change wins; different settings changed on different devices are both kept.

Offline is fine. A change waits on the device and goes up the next time it can reach us. Sync runs when the app starts, when you come back to it, a few seconds after you change a setting, and every few minutes while the app is open. Sync now runs it straight away.

Everything synced is stored encrypted on our server. Deleting your account deletes it.

Signing out

Sign out on this device signs out this device only. Sign out on all devices signs out every device on the account. Signing out removes nothing stored on the device.

Deleting your account

Under Delete account, tap Delete account, then Delete permanently. If you signed in more than ten minutes ago, the app asks you to confirm it is you first. With two-step verification on, it also asks for a code.

Deleting removes the account and everything stored with it from our server straight away, and signs out every device. The data on each device stays where it is, and the app keeps working without an account. We send a confirmation email.

Backups and your account

A backup never includes your sign-in. Restoring a backup on a new phone does not sign that phone in; sign in on it separately.
